Take Time to Enjoy Cleveland’s Lakefront

One of this region’s greatest treasures is our lakefront, a treasure that has historically been neglected, forgotten, even treated abusively. Compared to a city like Chicago with its miles and miles of urban beaches and lakefront walking, running and cycling trails, Cleveland offers little access to the shore.

The only beach of any size in the city proper is at Edgewater Park, and until it was acquired in 2013 by the Cleveland Metroparks, along with five other lakefront properties, including the small beach at Euclid Beach Park, it was a pretty shabby site. That’s all changed. With significant upgrades to the entire park, a new beachhouse with a bar, numerous special events for summer visitors, and a summer full of special events, it’s become an appealing attraction for all-season visiting.

The Metroparks made significant upgrades to its other lakefront sites as well, including a new pier at Euclid Beach Park and a new restaurant at the East 55th Street Marina. While all the indoor facilities are closed, either for the season or because of COVID-19, there are still places to go to sit by the water. Edgewater provides lovely panoramas of both the downtown Cleveland and Lakewood skylines. The stalwart fishermen are always on the rocks at East 55th Street and there’s a long lakefront walk to stroll. And you’ll always find people sitting on the rocks lining the shore at E. 72nd Street across from Gordon Park, perhaps observing a sunset like the one above.
