Cleveland was once known as the “Forest City” for its lush tree cover. But over the years, it’s vanished, a victim of development and such tree enemies as Dutch Elm disease and the ash borer. Recently, there have been concerted efforts to restore the tree canopy, protecting the trees we have and aggressively planting more.
As part of the Doan Brook Partnership’s Bringing Nature Home speaker series, Courtney Blashka, director of conservation and community forestry at Holden Forests and Gardens, will talk about how the tree canopy was reduced from 95% forested to only 31% today, and the benefits of restoring some of that canopy with native trees.
The free talk takes place at the Cleveland Heights Community Center and afterwards, you can meet the Heights Tree people, who will help you choose a tree for your yard and give you guidance on how to plant and care for it.
The program is free and open to all. Register here.
