UPDATE:

Cancellation of March 12, 13 and 14 Cleveland Orchestra concerts due to concerns of coronavirus (COVID-19)

“The Cleveland Orchestra has been closely monitoring the recent outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) as well as the proactive approach taken by the State of Ohio in aggressively addressing the spread of the virus,” said André Gremillet, President & CEO of The Cleveland Orchestra. “Following yesterday’s report of the first case of community-spread COVID-19 in Ohio and the latest message and recommendations from Governor Mike DeWine and medical experts, The Cleveland Orchestra has decided to cancel its concerts scheduled at Severance Hall on March 12, 13, and 14. The health and wellbeing of our audience members, musicians, and staff are our highest priority, and we believe cancelling these concerts is the best course of action for our community and stakeholders. This decision, which was preceded by our decision not to go on our international tour next week, will have a significant negative financial impact for our Orchestra. We are especially appreciative of our generous patrons who will consider donating tickets which they purchased for these concerts. Over the course of our history, The Cleveland Orchestra has navigated challenges and continues to thrive because of the strength of the Northeast Ohio community. Now as always, we are grateful for their extraordinary support.”

Franz Schubert’s “Great Symphony” — his Symphony No. 9 — was written in the 1920s, shortly before the composer’s death in 1828, but not played in its entirety until a decade later. The monumental and exceptional long work earned it the name “Great.”

Also, according to Wikpedia, “The symphony was found to be very difficult for orchestras to play because of its extremely lengthy woodwind and string parts. When taking it to Paris in 1842 and London in 1844, Mendelssohn found orchestras completely unwilling to play it; in London, the violinists collapsed in laughter when rehearsing the second subject of the finale.”

Presumably that won’t happen when the Cleveland Orchestra tackles it this week at Severance Hall in its Thursday and Saturday evening concerts, where it will be paired with Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 2, written a century later. Both symphonies how influence from Beethoven.

Apparently, 11am is just too early to deal with the “Great” symphony. At the orchestra’s Friday morning concert, it will pair the Prokofiev with Schubert’s Symphony No. 3. The orchestra’s music director, Franz Welser-Möst, conducts all three concerts. Tickets are $21-$165.
