UPDATE: Stephen Petronio Company Performance Cancelled

This afternoon (Thu 3/12), we were faced with the difficult news that we must cancel this Saturday’s performance of Stephen Petronio Company at Playhouse Square due to the recent findings of COVID-19 (coronavirus) being present in the Northeast Ohio community, and by the recommendation from Governor Michael DeWine to avoid large public gatherings of 100 people or more. We rarely cancel dance performances, however we care deeply about our DANCECleveland patrons, employees, volunteers and the Stephen Petronio Company dancers. Your health and safety is our highest priority at this time. We intend to doing everything we can to follow guidelines outlined by our healthcare professionals. After waiting many years to bring this dance company to Cleveland, we are truly saddened that we will not be able to experience the amazing artistry of Stephen Petronio Company. We hope that we can bring them to northeast Ohio in the future and are exploring all of our options, however it has not yet been determined if or when the performance can or will be rescheduled for a later date.

We were eager to announce our upcoming 2020-2021 Season at the performance of Stephen Petronio and will miss being with you this weekend to share this news in person.  We encourage you to look at our new season by visiting our website and we look forward to the next time we can be together in the theatre this summer during ADF in CLE. We are appreciative of your understanding and continued support during this time.

We hope you will stay safe and healthy at home during this time.

Sincerely,

Pam Young

Dancer/choreographer Stephen Petronio formed his eponymous New York-based company in 1984. In that time, the so-called “post-modern” ensemble has become known for its wide-ranging and adventurous collaborations, building dances on music by Nick Cave, Fischerspooner, Rufus Wainwright, Diamanda Galás, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson and Sheila Chandra, among others; incorporating visuals by artists such as Cindy Sherman and Anish Kapoor; and drawing on adventurous designers, from Narciso Rodriguez to Leigh Bowery, for its looks. Its longtime lighting design Ken Tabachnick is a key part of its stage impact as well

The company has taking its groundbreaking multi-disciplinary pieces across the country and to more than 40 countries around the world. So it’s kind of amazing that it’s just now making its Ohio debut with a performance at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre. That evening will feature pieces from its repertoire, such as 2018’s Hardness10, with music by Nico Muhly and Patricia Field costumes hand-painted by Iris Bonner/These Pink Lips; 2005’s Bud, set to music by Wainwright; and the 2019 work, American Landscapes, with music by Jim Jarmusch and Jozef Van Wissem and images by Robert Longo. All were choreographed by Petronio.

Tickets are $25-$65.
