CityMusic Cleveland is offering a familiar piece of music with a new take. Antonin Dvorak’s 1893 Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”), familiarly known as New World Symphony, was the Czech composer’s tribute to America where he lived and taught for several years. The popular work drew on African-American spirituals and Native-American music as well as the folk music of his own country and western European classical music.

The program, New World Revisited, will feature not only the Dvorak Symphony but also the world premiere of jazz bassist John Clayton’s New World Revisited, featuring Clayton as soloist, The Spirit of the Groove, and spoken world by Cleveland’s Orlando Watson. The ensemble’s music director, Amit Peled, leads the program which will have four performances: Wed 3/11 @ Lakeland Community College, Thu 3/12 @ Maltz Performing Arts Center, Fri 3/13 @ Lakewood Congregational Church and Sat 3/13 2 the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Slavic Village.

As usual, all CityMusic Cleveland performances are free, and no ticket or reservation is required.
