Honoring beekeepers

With perfect sunny weather, St. Clair Avenue was lined for blocks on both sides to await the parade that kicks off the capstone day of annual celebration of Cleveland Kurentovanje. Based on a popular Slovenian festival, it centers on people dressed as big fuzzy “kurents” ringing bells to chase away the winter.

A dozen or so kurents brought up the rear, following a procession that included polka bands, ethnic dancers from several cultures, the St. Martin De Porres band and high steppers, a float devoted to this years theme — Slovenia’s beekeeper culture — and even the adorable adoptable dogs from City Dogs.

After the parade — and after the kurents posed for hundred of photos — the crowd poured inside the Slovenian National Home for an afternoon of music, dancing, eating, drinking, shopping, bocce playing, face painting, crafting and ice carving.
