Leonard Bernstein’s Former Assistant Speaks at Maltz Museum

Wed 2/5 @ 7PM

Charlie Harmon was noted conductor/composer Leonard Bernstein’s personal assistant for four years (1982-1986) in the 1980s, toward the end of his life (Bernstein died in 1990 at the age of 72). Of course, he got a book out of it!

The 2018 book, On the Road and Off the Record with Leonard Bernstein: My Years with the Exasperating Genius, depicts the exhausting schedule Harmon followed as part of the job, as the musician travelled the world, rehearsing, performing and composing. Yes, there’s plenty of sex and drugs, if not a lot of rock & roll, as well as detrimental hangers-on and a nasty manager. After four years, Harmon had to seek professional help.

Harmon will tell the story at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, where the exhibit Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music will be on view through March 1. He’ll read from the book and answer questions from the audience.

Admission is $10, $5 for Maltz members.
