Learn Why Ohio’s Fate Hinges on the Census

Mon 2/10 @ 7PM

Tue 2/11 @ 4-6PM

You may get tired of hearing from us about the census, but there’s a reason we’re harping on it. The national census, held every ten years, is crucial to democracy and justice in our country. It decides how many congressional districts a state has and how they are divided. It’s widely predicted Ohio could lose another district due to population loss. In 1940, it had 24 districts; it had 21 in 1990, 19 in 2000 and 18 in 2010. Currently it has 16. So you can see why counting each and every person in the state is critical. In addition to congressional districts, the census determines what share of the federal pie each state gets for various programs.

Ohio also has many people who are undercounted for many reasons. Groups who tend to avoid or be missed by the census include the homeless, the poor, immigrants and undocumented people.

This week census specialists will present the program “The 2020 Census: What You Need to Know” at the Lee Road branch of the Cleveland Heights/University Heights Public Library on Mon 2/10 @ 7PM. On Tue 2/11 @ 4-6PM, a similar program will take place at a Cleveland State University Levin College Dean’s Forum featuring four panelists who will talk about different perspectives on why the census matters to us. It takes place in the Roberta Steinbacher Atrium on the 1st floor of Levin College, 1717 Euclid Avenue.

Both events are free and open to all.
