BOP STOP & New Ghosts Welcome Scandinavian Avant-Garde Quintet

Tue 2/25 @ 8PM

The mission of Cleveland concert presenters New Ghosts is to promote freeform improvisational music in the spirit of legendary Cleveland-born avant-garde sax player Albert Ayler. While Ayler died at the age of 34 in New York in 1970 (his body was found in the East River, a presumed suicide; he is buried in Beachwood), his influence has been enormous.

New Ghosts is again partnering with the BOP STOP, where it has frequently presented shows, to bring in Norwegian/Swedish Quintet Friends and Neighbors. With sax, trumpet, piano, bass and drums, the band plays music in the tradition of such avant-garde jazz musicians as Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp who were contemporaries of Ayler’s. They’ve released three albums of their own compositions in that style.

Tickets for the show are $15.
