Blax Museum Program Honors Black Cultural & Historical Greats

Northeast Ohio poet/educator/cultural facilitator Michelle R. Smith has created an event called “BLAX MUSEUM: A Tribute to Art & Excellence,” an event that simultaneously pays tribute to the greats of African-American culture and history and showcases contemporary talent from northeast Ohio.

This year’s edition, co-produced with Josiah Quarles, will pay tribute to Maya Angelou, Fannie Lou Hamer, Fred Hampton, Billie Holiday, Zora Neale Hurston, Mae Jemison, Nina Simone, Harriet Tubman, A’Lelia Walker, Carrie Mae Weems and a few others.

At the Twinsburg Library featured performers include include singer/writer Latoya Kent (Walker); performance coach/writer Staci Jordan Shelton (Giovanni); singer Joy Ex (Simone); writer/rapper Josiah Quarles/Zion of Muamin Collective (Hampton); and English literature professor/writer Dr. Brenda R. Smith (Hurston).

Among those paying tribute at the East Cleveland Library will be poet Eva Barrett (Angelou); teacher/multimedia artist Melissa Candace (Jemison); singer Joy Ex (Simone); poet Raja Freeman (Tubman); photographer/filmmaker Jasmine A. Golphin (Weems); singer and multimedia artist Maita Morne (Holiday); writer and rapper Josiah Quarles/Zion of Muamin Collective (Hampton); journalist/bassist Afi Scruggs (Hamer); and English literature professor/writer Dr. Brenda R. Smith (Hurston).

This year the event is taking place twice: at the Twinsburg Public Library Fri 2/7 @ 6:30-8pm and its “home” location, the Reese Performing Arts Center at the East Cleveland Public Library, on Sat 2/22 @ 3-6pm.
