Akron Exhibit Explores “The Art of BEING”

Donna Coleman’s “Fan Base”

Thu 2/13 @ 6-8PM

Akron Soul Train opens its newly remodeled gallery with a show called The Art of BEING, which features the work of six regional artists looking at self-identity and how it connects us to others and to our communities.

It features the work of artists Caludia Berlinski (Cortland), John Carlson (Cleveland), Donna Coleman (Oberlin), Kristi Copez (Shaker Heights), Natalie Grieshammer (Stow) and Joe VanKerkhove (Toledo). Their styles range from Coleman’s colorful paintings that focus on people who are often invisible to Carlson’s darker works about the transition of his songs from adolescents to young men; from Copez’s mixed-media ceramic prayer vessels focused on motherhood issues to Grieshammer’s mixed-media textile pieces which confront the masculine dominance of the art world; to VanKerkhove’s and Berlinski’s pieces using the imagery of everyday items to explore the roles of personal histories and memories.

The show opens with a free, public reception Thu 2/13 @ 6-8pm and remains on view through Sat 2/29, Wednesday-Saturday 11am-4pm, and until 8pm Thu 2/20 for Third Thursday.
