The weather outside is dreary, but one sure sign that spring is coming is the annual Winter Seed Swap, hosted by the Cleveland Seed Bank. The event offers growers and would-be growers the chance to get a supply of seeds for free — veggies, herbs and flowers. Experienced growers bring seeds they’ve saved from the previous year, while the seed bank provides a large selection for those who arrive empty-handed. Plant cuttings and cultures such as yeast were also brought by attendees to share.
At this year’s event, taking place at St. Patrick’s in Ohio City, Brazilian-American guitarist/vocalist Luca Mundaca provided a musical backdrop for the huge crowd seeking out seeds for what they hope to see flourishing in their gardens in the summer. In addition, organizations and businesses such as Praxis Fiber Workshop, West Creek Conservancy and Rust Belt Riders provided information on their own growing and conservation activities — all aimed, like the Cleveland Sed Bank’s, at working toward a healthier and more sustainable environment.
