One Community Reads Launches Region-Wide Book Discussion

Mon 1/20 @ 4:30PM

The idea of community-wide “reads,” where one book is chosen around which to center a series of discussions and events, is growing by leaps and bounds across the country.

Here in Cleveland, One Community Reads, hosted by nine public library systems, Playhouse Square and the City Club of Cleveland, will launch this week, to encourage people to read New York University social science professor Eric Klinenberg’s Palaces for the People: How Social Infrastructure Can Help Fight Inequality, Polarization, and the Decline of Civic Life, and come together to explore the issues it raises about how a community can be better structured to address the problems facing it.

From January through May, community members are encouraged to read the book and participate in one or more of the ongoing series of events. It kicks off Mon 1/20 with a celebration at the downtown Cleveland Public Library where an exhibition called Cleveland 20/20: A Photographic Exploration of Cleveland, which touches on some of the same ideas as the book, will be unveiled.

Klinenberg will appear at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre on Mon 3/9 for a book discussion which will be broadcast live at five area libraries.
