Woodchoppers Ball Brings Nine Acoustic Finger-Style Guitarists to the Kent Stage

Muriel Anderson

Sat 12/7 @ 7PM

The annual Woodchopper’s Ball at the Kent Stage was started by Cleveland acoustic finger-style guitarist Brian Henke, and of course, he’s one of the performers.

But he’s joined as always by a stellar lineup of his musicians-friends from around the region who work the same musical territory. The eight other players include returning and first-time participants. Regular attendees at this event will know Chicago’s Muriel Anderson who plays harp-guitar on music that incorporates pop, rock, bluegrass, classical and global influences and often uses artist-designed backdrops. Indiana’s Michael Kelsey, who’s known for creating a huge variety of sound onstage all by himself, is another frequent visitor to this area. New York-based Mark Sganga and singer/songwriter/guitarist Helen Avakian, based in Madison, Wisconsin, are also returning participants.

They’ll be joined by up-and-comers Matt Thomas and Andy Poxon, Irish guitar player Dave Irwin and Northeast Ohio retired high school teacher and guitar builder Jesse Smith, who has been playing with bands in the area for more than 50 years.

Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door.
