Akron Unitarian Universalist Church Holds Two-Day Racial Justice Event

Fri 11/15 @ 7PM

Sat 11/16 @ 9AM-4:30PM

While it seems like you can’t turn around without finding a conference on entrepreneurship or economic development, the Unitarian Universalists are, of course, doing something different.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Akron’s Racial Justice Task Force is hosting a two-day event focused on the knotty question of how to come together in these divided, polarized times.

On Fri 11/15, Dr. David Campt, a national expert and consultant in inclusion and equity and author of the White Ally Toolkit, will give an interactive talk on “Connection Trumps Conflict.” He’ll offer his thoughts on helping to change attitudes and engage in tough conversations with your racist uncle without creating more head-butting rage. The event is free and open to the public, although a suggested donation of $20 at the door is “welcome.”

The following day, the church is sponsoring a daylong workshop intensive called “Dismantling Racism One Conversation at a Time.” It’s designed, they say, to help social justice allies expand and enhance the ability to navigate situations that challenge us.” The workshop is $65 including lunch and materials. Saturday’s workshop intensive is $65 which includes lunch and materials.  Some financial assistance is available. To register go to uurjtf.

“Social justice groups, faith-based organizations, diversity workers and those that just want to make it through Thanksgiving dinner are encouraged to attend,” says the press release. Good luck with that. Don’t throw the yams at that MAGA uncle!
