Trinity’s Brownbag Concerts Present Music Inspired by Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen”

Wed 11/6 @ noon

Poet/essayist/journalist/playwright Claudia Rankine’s 2014 book-length poem, Citizen: An American Lyric made quite a splash, and continues to do so. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the NAACP Image Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Award and the Forward Prize, was also the only poetry book to make The New York Times nonfiction bestseller list, and sparked countless discussion groups with its meaty content. Its seven chapters, interspersed with images of artworks and other graphics, commented on public and private incidents and their meaning, with an emphasize on societal and personal racism. It’s a rich, complex work that has been described as criticism as well as poetry.

Now vocalists Kristine Caswelch and Matt Jones, along with pianist Nicole Keller, will interpret it musically, performing music and songs based on the book for the Trinity Cathedral Brownbag Concert series. It’s free and open to the public.
