Pittsburgh’s Alia Musica Plays Contemporary Pieces at the BOP STOP

Sun 10/27 @ 7PM

The Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project brings an intriguing guest ensemble to the BOP STOP. Alia Musica Pittsburgh specializes in what it calls a “challenging repertory” of all genres of contemporary music, by both currently working and 20th-century composers. It aims to offer the same kind of immediacy and interactive relevance that the music of Mozart and Beethoven had in their day when it was the current “contemporary” or even “pop” music. The group hosts the biennial Pittsburgh Festival of New Music to showcase cutting edge performances by artists and ensembles with a similar approach.

Federico Garcia-De Castro will conduct a group of nine musicians on percussion, piano, guitar, violin, cello, flutes, clarinet and voice as they perform a program of five pieces written between 2010 and 2018, including Marilyn Shrude’s 2018 “Within the Wall,” which the group commissioned and “Memoria” by Garcia-De Castro, based on the last words of assassinated Colombian politician/activist Bernardo Jaramillo Ossa.

The performance is free.
