New Orleans Drag/Bounce Artist Big Freedia Entertains at the Beachland

Mon 11/4 @ 8:30PM

There’s something in the air of New Orleans that creates unique people and unique culture, sights and sounds and tastes not quite like those anywhere else. It’s the birthplace of jazz and the home of the New Orleans-style brass band, and of course it has its own style of hip hop called bounce, which has echoes of another unique New Orleans institution: its Mardi Gras Indians.

It’s got some unusual characters too, such as Katey Red, a gay drag queen who called her sound “sissy bounce.” She released her first album when she was just 16, and has inspired others, such as Freddie Ross aka Big Freedia, another gay drag artist, who has achieved a degree of national renown with appearances on the TV series Treme and on late night talk shows. Even Beyonce has sampled her voice and used it in her shows, and she is featured on Kesha’s latest single.

She’ll be hitting the Beachland Ballroom with her definitely-won’t-be-boring music and sense of style. Philadelpiha rockers Low Cut Connie open. Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door.
