This is the week when Cleveland gets to meet the newly appointed music director of CityMusic Cleveland as it launches its 2019-2020 season. Israeli-American cellist Amit Peled will make his conducting debut in a program called “Between Two Giants.” It features Mozart’s Symphony No. 29, Jessie Montgomery’s Strum, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, along with Max Bruch’s Kol Nidre, on which Peled will solo on his instrument.

In CityMusic’s press release, Amit says, “As a former  basketball player, and someone who is often referred to as a giant himself (being 6’5), this program “Between Two Giants” is a particularly fun and accessible mix of musical giants (Haydn and Mozart) conducted by a ‘giant’ conductor — surely no need for a conductor podium! Between these masterworks is one of my favorite works, Kol Nidre for Cello and Orchestra by Max Bruch, in which I will perform as cello soloist in honor of the October Jewish High Holidays, and a more modern work, Strum by popular New York composer Jessie Montgomery.”

CityMusic Cleveland will perform Thursday at The Temple-Tifereth Israel, Friday at St. Noel Church in Willoughby Hills, Saturday at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, and Sunday at Lakewood Congregational Church. As always, all CityMusic programs are free.
