2021 FRONT Triennial Announces First Funded Project, a Community Dance Floor in Akron

The second FRONT International Triennial runs from July 17-October 2, 2021, which seems like a long way off. But when you’re planning such a sprawling, multi-part event it’s really not. And the 2021 co-artistic directors Prem Krishnamurthy and Tina Kukielski are already starting to make plans.

The first announcement of funded project has just been released, receiving $100,000 from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for a community project in Akron where the event plans to expand its presence in 2021, in addition to continuing its partnership with the Akron Art Museum.

The project involves collaboration with the Stockholm-based studio Dansbana!, which has a mission to create outdoor dance spaces that are welcoming to young women and encourage diversity. The community and its cultural organizations will have input into creating an open-access public dance floor in downtown Akron, intended to emphasize “the value of dance as a tool of personal and collective transformation.” “Dansbana! Akron — A Public Dance Floor for All,” will include a custom dance floor and sculptural Bluetooth speakers, and be available for special performances as well as every-day use.
