Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts Presents Show About Refugees

Sat 9/14 @ 7-9PM

Columbus-based photographer/videographer/”visual ethnographer” Tariq Tarey has used his work to focus on communities of refugees, especially African refugees, who have settled in Columbus. A

Tarey chose from his portraits and worked with writer Amanda Erin to create The dis[place]d: seeking refuge Project, which aims to connect refugees with rural Appalachian Ohio residents. Erin amplifies the photographs by telling the stories of how these refugees are becoming part of this country.

The show will be on view at Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts North Water Street Gallery, with a meet-and-greet opening reception Sat 9/14, where Tarey will host a Q&A discussion. Kent State professor Dave Foster will be there to answer questions about KSU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Visitors will be invited to share their own ancestors’ immigrant stories.

The show is on view through Sat 9/21.
