For more than 40 years, Near West Theatre has been pursuing its unique mission: mounting extravagant musical productions with large, diverse casts that include people of all ages, races, ethnicities, socio-economic levels, gender and sexual identities, and amount of performance experience. Theater professionals may share the stage with at-risk or abused young people looking for a place to fit in and find a welcoming family. Since 2015, it’s performed in a dedicated, state-of-the-art space in Gordon Square.
For those who want to learn more and meet the new guard — Trinidad Snider took over as artistic director from 25-year A.D. Bob Navis Jr, who retired late last year — Near West is hosting a community open house. There’ll be live music on the patio, dancing, an open mic, family crafts courtesy of Near West’s neighbor theater Talespinner Children’s Theatre, free food as well as nearby Ninja City selling additional items, a cash bar and door prizes.
It’s family-friendly, free and open to all.
