Drumplay Brings Global Jazz to Lakewood Library’s Front Porch

Fri 8/23 @ 7PM

There are still a few more weeks to catch a free outdoor concert, such as the ones on the front porch of the Lakewood Public Library’s main branch, which have been going on every Friday all summer.

Week 9 — the second to last — of the series features the Cleveland long-running band Drumplay, founded by percussionist James Onysko more than 25 years ago. In that time, they’ve played festivals in Europe, toured regionally and released several albums. And as their name suggests, percussion is at the heart of what they do: a semi-improvised blending of jazz and global folk sounds. Although there have been many member changes over the years, resulting in shifting emphasis in the music, the ensemble currently includes four respected local players: in addition to Onysko, there’s J. Scott Franklin on trumpet, flugelhorn and lead vocals, George Lee on acoustic bass, whistling and vocals, and Paul Stranahan on drums.
