Once again, the plaza in front of the Rock Hall will be bustling with activity on Wednesday nights, as its Summer in the City series kicks off again, featuring a mix of local and national bands for five weeks.
It debuts this week with a couple of woman artists who do that mildly annoying thing of calling themselves by a cute band name even though it’s a one-person show. Nashville’s Sophie Allison calls herself “Soccer Mommy,” and while she emerged from that city’s underground/DIY scene, she cites such unabashed popsters as Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne as influences. She quit school to focus on her songwriting, and is now backed by a full-time band.
That’s very similar to the trajectory followed by Cleveland guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Amy Shoff, who shares the bill with Allison. Her Heavenly Creatures went from a bedroom project to an actual three-piece band, who have played at numerous clubs and festivals around northeast Ohio over the last several years.
The shows are free, and there’s a bar and food for sale on the plaza.
The Rock Hall’s Sun Sets series on Fridays on their outdoor stage from 5-7PM features Cleveland favorites Vanity Crash on Fri 7/19. Free!
