Bassist Steve Peffer and guitarist Kevin Jaworski met at Lakewood High School and performed together in Nine Shocks Terror and Homostupids. Later they recruited drummer Mark TurVeen and then Peffer met singer and DJ Haley Morris at WCSB radio, where they each had an air shift. She laid her unique vocals on top of a 5-track demo the nascent band had put together, and the reaction was, “Holy f***ing s**t!” Morris was in the band.
A review of The Pleasure Leftists’ first release described Morris thusly, “She has this intense, Siouxsie-ish warble that sounds like she is crying while impersonating Dracula (which I guess is conceivably the gothiest image possible).” Pitchfork exclaimed, “Her husky delivery cascades across the tenacious track with an arresting, dark luster…”
Their new album, The Gate, saw them visiting Portland, OR in March 2019 to record on tape with Stan Wright (Arctic Flowers). They describe the 10-song release as possessing “a style that draws from the early British post-punk classics on labels like 4AD and Factory Records, but retains an organic, original sound that few contemporary acts harness.” This first pressing encompasses 400 Black LPs, 100 Opaque dark purple LPs, and 100 CDs. Cassette? You’ll have to ask the band.
Find out what their newest release sounds like on Sat 7/13 at “Mahall’s Bowling Paradise” when Pleasure Leftists release their next disc with Jeff Hatfield opening. Catch a sample from a few years back in this video.
