City Stages in Ohio City Winds Down With Mali’s BKO

Wed 7/31 @ 7:30PM

This year’s City Stages global music series winds down this week with a performance by Mali’s BKO. Like many African bands who have toured and developed an international following, this quintet combines modern electric dance music with its native Malian musical traditions.

“Associating the guitar of griots with the lute of Bambara hunters has never been undertaken before in the Mailan music universe,” their bio asserts. “It is indeed two opposite worlds that BKO have decides to bring up together to develop at resolutely unique urban style rooted in secular tradition.”

The performance takes place on a stage in the middle of the street at the intersection of Church and W. 29th in Ohio City’s Hingetown neighborhood. Food and drink are available for purchase in the parking lot of the Transformer Station (which is open until 9pm so you can check out their current exhibit, I Sing the Body). The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Go Studio will be there from 5-9pm for hands-on art projects.

Bring your blanket or chair; there’s also plenty of room for dancing. The event is free.
