Xtinguish Torchfest/Cuyahoga50: A Celebration of Water

Although there have been events since earlier this year, the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the last Cuyahoga River fire (June 22, 1969) comes to a head this week with the Xtinguish Torchfest and other events such as Cuyahoga50. They are engaging the public to both look back and look ahead: while that fire was an impetus for the environmental movement and the passage of the Clean Water Act the following year, clearly, much remains to be done.

It’s a packed week, and there’s no way anyone can make it to all the events. While Ojibwe elder Sharon Day is making her way from the river’s headwaters to its mouth, Torchfest brings a torch through communities on that route, celebrating as it goes, until it reaches the lake early opening where there will be a celebration Saturday morning. Meanwhile, there are photo shows and art installations, forums, panels and educational opportunities, bridge tours and live music and even a roller skating party.

We’ve rounded up a list of some of the more intriguing events and previewed them for you. Here’s a list.
