Paul Stranahan Brings His Gongs & Singing Bowls to the Lakewood Library

Sun 6/30 @ 2PM

Percussionist Paul Stranahan is one of the area’s most interesting musicians, proficient on a wide range of instruments, including gongs and Tibetan singing bowls, which he uses to create experimental, improvisational music, sometimes by himself and sometimes in collaboration with other musicians. No two Stranahan shows are alike.

Last year he self-released his second gong/singing bowls CD called Journey to Planet Gong, which offers some of the flavor of what he does, although of course, he’ll never do precisely that performance again. He says, “Drum set is really my first instrument and I came across gongs first as a way to have some more interesting sounds especially when it came to group freeform improvisation.”

He goes on to describe how he developed a addiction to gongs which came to dominate his drum kit — and then discovered singing bowls while searching the internet for more gongs.

Come hear the magic he makes with these instruments at the Lakewood Public Library Auditorium, as part of the Sunday with the Friends concert series. It’s free and open to all.
