Kenyan Ensemble Plays Kent’s North Water Street Gallery

Sat 6/29 @ 8PM

Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts has had an unexpected addition to its Around the World global music concert series.

Kenge Kenge Orutu System was founded in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1996, to perform music based on the traditional music of the Luo people of the western Kenya region of Nyanza, blended with Kenyan popular music benga. They utilize native Kenyan instruments such as the one-string fiddle orutu, an eight-string lyre called nyatiti, a cowhorn called oporo, and asili, an end-blown flute, along with percussion instruments, singing and dancing.

The ensemble has performed around the world at global music events such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Rainforest World Music Festival and WOMAD, and has appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered.

They’ll perform at SRCA’s North Water Street Gallery in downtown Kent. It’s a suggested admission of $10 or pay what you can. The 8pm concert will be preceded by a 7:30pm meet-and-greet with light food and drinks.

The group will also do an interactive workshop at North Water Street Gallery @ 2pm. Admission is $15, or $20 for both workshop and concert.
