Thu 6/6-Sun 6/9
The 19th annual Cleveland Classical Guitar Festival is a compressed feast of performances, master classes, lectures and other events for students and fans of this subtle, intricate musical genre.
The event is hosted by the Cleveland Institute of Music and its guitar department co-chairs Jason Vieaux and Colin Davin, both of whom will perform as well. Other performers include Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang and English lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, all of whom will also be doing master classes that are free for the public to observe. After concert gatherings at nearby L’Albatros give the public a chance to socialize with the artists.
Among the special events are American classical guitarist Lynn McGrath giving a lecture/performance on combining music with Spanish-language literature, and American master guitar maker Alfredo Velazquez lecturing on the intricacies of his guitar-making process. Five of the headlining performers will engage in a roundtable discussion about commissioning new music for their instruments, and youth ensembles will perform in CIM’s lobby.
