78th Street’s Third Friday Is Packed With New Shows & Special Events

Fri 6/21 @ 5-9PM

This month’s Third Friday at 78th Street studios is packed with things to see and do.

HEDGE Gallery opens a show of brand-new work by someone who’s well-known in the area’s art scene as both a creative artist and an arts catalyst, curator and promoter: Liz Maugans. Her new collection of print-based collage work, titled Beautiful Mess, is a deep dive into where she’s at in her life now.

She’s put together the new works out of pieces of old prints, which she describes as “visual leftovers from her share of accumulated failures,” along with detritus from her own past and her family’s: Letters, cards, photos and more are the basis for many of her new pieces.

“After losing her mother, brother, and some very dear friends in the past year, Maugans is examining her role as an artist and the caretaker for their memories,” says the gallery’s press release. “Her poignant new work explores the emotional and psychological impact of life altering decisions and experiences; the covering up, the revelations, the recipes for living.”

It’s on view through 8/2.

Head upstairs to the Derek Hess Gallery, which will be showing the art of the husband-and-wife team of Steve Ehret and Kat Francis in Grey Matter. Their brightly colored, even whimsical designs explore serious ideas, what they describe as “the strange area between subconscious and conscious thinking,” melancholy feelings that lie under the surface .

“Moments such as catching a glimpse in neighbor’s window, curious of what their life is like. We all do it, yet we are ashamed or try to hide this curiosity” they say.

Be sure to head downstairs to ARTneo where its new exhibit The ART of Pride will be on view. In keeping with its mission of collecting, exhibiting and educating the work of area artists from all eras, the show features northeast Ohio LGBT artists past and present. It hopes to raise their visibility as LGBT artists and share their diverse range of perspectives in various media. It runs through Fri 7/19.

Come a little early and stop by Susie Frazier’s studio/showroom where she’ll be supplementing her own nature-based art with designs — furniture, textiles and other home décor — by artists she describes as “some of the most soulful makers from around the globe” in a Salvaged Treasures Showcase.

She’ll also have plants from the Lakewood Plant Company, and summer spritzers to enjoy as you browse. It’s a one-day-only event that runs from noon-9pm.

And while you’re browsing the galleries and studios, be sure to stop long enough to catch some of the funk/jazz/soul/Latin/rock blend of Acid Cats, a instrumental ensemble led by Tom Lehman, an alum of Tri-C’s renowned jazz studies program. The music is presented by Tri-C JazzFest and Gordon Square Presents. They’ll be performing from 5-9:30pm.
