It’s Third Friday at 78th Street Studios again, and if you haven’t checked out the in-depth retrospective of the work of Cleveland’s Douglas Max Utter at HEDGE Gallery tonight’s the last time for you to do so. It covers this prominent artist’s career from the 60s through to his current work, giving viewers the chance to see the themes, compositions and materials hes explored over the years.
The Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery opens a new show by an artist familiar to visitors to that gallery: John R. Natavio. His Space Time Diversions continues his explorations of the connections between art and science. He combines that with an interest in tribal art from various locations around the world and periods in history to create pieces that are both spiritual and logical. “Developing and understanding art over time has always required spiritual and scientific discovery, with a coexistence between them,” says Nativio. “The road continues between ancient times and today.”
At E11even 2 Gallery, co-owner R!ch Cihlar showcases his collaboration with fellow artists Bob Peck, which they’ve dubbed Don’t Panic!, in the show Tread Lightly, which they say “pays reverence to the little things in life.”
“When Bob and I were planning this exhibition I was thinking about things that could really ruin your day, something like getting stung by a bee or being bit by a snake,” says Cihlar. “It may or may not kill you, but you should never underestimate the little guy.” Bees, snakes and more provide images for the work which starts with Cihlar’s stenciled image which Peck works on top of with spray paint and acrylic. The show runs through 6/21.
And be sure to check out the show of new work by Lila Rose Kole with Kenno Apatrida at the 2nd floor Facing Forward Gallery, the culmination of a two-week visit by Kole who worked in Cleveland for a couple of years before moving on to Germany.
