More than 500 bookstores in 49 states (who’s the slacker!?) will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day, now in its 5^th year, this Saturday, hosting sales, special events, parties, giveaways and exclusive merchandise.

That includes bookstores here in northeast Ohio, of course, among them Appletree Books, Mac’s Backs and Attenson’s Antiques & Books in Cleveland Heights, Loganberry Books and Strong Bindery on Larchmere Blvd near Shaker Square, Visible Voice Books in Tremont, Learned Owl Books in Hudson and Fireside Book Shop in Chagrin Falls. Check out the one nearest you to find out what they’ve got going on — or check out a new one you’ve never been to.

One special activity is the Heights Bicycle Coalition, which is holding a scavenger hunt to locations mentioned in Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere which is set in and around Shaker Heights. It starts at noon at Appletree Books and ends there two hours later, where all participants who have finished their checklists are entered in a raffle. Check websites for hours and events.
