Noisy Rockers Cereal Banter Celebrate Their Latest Release at the Beachland Tavern

Sat 4/13 @ 8:30PM

Cereal Banter was formed by Cleveland drummer/vocalist/synth player Joseph Joseph a decade ago to play experimental rock that takes liberties with sound, playing with sonic textures while maintaining a loose connection to melody and song structure. He’s worked with different partners and contributing musicians but for the past several years, his collaborator has been bassist/guitarist Nicholas Gunzburg, who also contributes vocals and synths.

Together they put out the 2015’s “Oatmeal Outburst”/Porridge Parley,” a pair of tracks that clock in at album-side length, and the 2016 seven-song EP Junk Jazz, described aptly by one reviewer as “spastic and strident.” Nw their new release Wonderful Quest, is coming out this week. While they call it which they call “a chronicle of realized, improvised & progressively de-formed audio outcomes,” it’s actually much more song-oriented than most of their previous efforts, with more reliance on vocals and structured tunes coated with noise. The album kicks off with the giddy, positively poppy “Nepotism Prism,” but their experimental tendencies spill out in the sprawling nine-minute “WQ.”

They’ll celebrate the new album with a release party at the Beachland Tavern. Tiger Sex, the Venus Flytraps and the Pizza Creeps are also on the bill. Tickets are $7 in advance, $10 at the door.
