Douglas Lora and João Luiz, both from São Paulo where they met and began collaborating as teenagers, have been playing together as the Brasil Guitar Duo for more than 20 years. Both headed to the U.S. to complete their musical educations, Lora at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, Luiz at the Manhattan School of Music.
Their focus is on performing a combination of classical pieces by composers such as Bach, Rameau and Debussy, traditional Brazilian music arranged by Luiz and new works, including compositions by Lora. When they perform at Shaker Heights’ Plymouth Church UCC as part of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s international series, they’ll perform music by Rameau, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Hand, Egberto Gismondi and Leo Brouwer, the last three living composers.
Tickets are $10-40. The concert will be preceded by a lecture by Brazilian music expert Kevin Wlson from 6:30-7:10pm.
