Akron Symphony Goes Into Space with “Also Sprach Zarathustra” at E.J.Thomas Hall

Sat 3/16 @ 8PM

Richard Strauss’ tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra, composed in 1896, became a cultural phenomenon when its opening section was used in the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

That piece — the whole thing — is the cornerstone of the Akron Symphony’s upcoming concert, which will continue the outer-space theme with excerpts from the score to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, written by master film composer John Williams.

The evening opens with contemporary composer John Adams’ work A Short Ride in a Fast Machine. It also includes Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto, composed in the late 40s, just as Korngold was winding down his own film composing career. Violinist Jinjoo Cho, a Cleveland Institute of Music alum with a growing international career, who is a regular on northeast Ohio concert stages, is the soloist for the concerto.

The concert at EJ Thomas Hall is preceded by “A Preview from the Podium” with Maestro Christopher Wilkins at 7pm. Tickets are $25-$60.
