There’s always something going on at 78th Street Studios on Third Fridays. Even when there aren’t a lot of openings in that particular month, the building’s four floors are sure to contain a lot of surprises you missed the last time around.
There are a couple of things you won’t want to miss this month, however. ARTneo is opening Continuum: Art of the Cleveland School and Beyond, a show it put together with the Canton Museum of Art, where it showed recently. The ARTneo version will be a little different: smaller, due to its more limited space, and including some different artists as well as it looks at how Cleveland’s early watercolorists and ceramics artists influenced subsequent generations. The show is on view through Fri 5/17.
But that’s not all ARTneo’s got going on this month. Once Third Friday winds down at 9pm, they’ll be gearing up for their Cool Cats of Cleveland Disco Party, which kicks off at 9:30 and goes on until 1:30am. There’ll be light food, a cash bar and music by DJ Sputnik, as well as a costume contest with prize for best disco costume, best cat costume and best disco cat costume, with the grand prize a pair of cat ears created by Bunny Paige, whose studio is next door. And there will be cat-themed art by Cleveland artists on display. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
This month’s big new opening is Relief Therapy, featuring the work of Italian printmaker Claudio Orso, at HEDGE Gallery. It includes both his woodcuts and his ceramic pieces, inspired by his family, his travels and nature, with fragments of both the English and Italian languages woven in. There are also political overtones to his pieces, which include references to both historical and current events. At the opening on Third Friday, Orso will set up a mobile printing station to give visitors a “behind the scenes” look at his working process.
