The rate at which Texas churns out high-quality roots music singer/songwriters is staggering, even exceeding the rate that it turns out crazy politicians (and if Texas journalist Molly Ivins was still alive, she’d tell you how hard that is!)

Thirty-six-year-old Gina Chavez, who advertises herself as “Queer. Latinx. Catholic.” is one of a rising generation of such artists and with a Latina-American background and bilingual performances, she represents contemporary Texas. In her marbled music, there are swirls of pop, rock, folk, cumbia, reggaeton, and bossa nova, among other things.

She released her first album Hanging Spoons in 2007, and more recently, a bilingual record called Up.Rooted. Like many of her ilk, she’s also an activist, working with young people in El Salvador and founding a nonprofit to support them. Of COURSE, she lives in Austin!

She’ll be performing at Cuyahoga Valley National Park’s Happy Days Lodge. Tickets are $10-$28.
