Dr. Mary Weems’ “At Last” Explores the Lives of 11 Black Women at Ensemble Theatre

Playwright/poet/educator and winner of a 2015 Cleveland Arts Prize Dr. Mary Weems has written numerous works for the stage among her more than a dozen books. They include At Last: Celebrating the Lives of Black Women, which looks at the lives of 11 black women artists, educators and innovators, exploring the challenges they faced, from institutional racism and sexism to drug addiction. It opens at Ensemble Theatre this week.

Directed by Ashley Aquilla, actresses Christina Johnson, Sherrie Tolliver, and Sha’ton La’Tique take on the personas of Zora Neale Hurston, Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, June Jordan, Etta James, Phyllis Hyman, Michelle Obama and Queen Latifah.

At Last will be performed through Sun 3/3. Tickets are $18-$25. They can be purchased in advance at www.maryeweems.org , atlast.thundertix.com or at the door at Ensemble Theater.
