Travel Back to 1969 at Cleveland History Center Benefit Somewhere in Time

Sat 2/2 @ 7-11PM

By any measure, 1969 was a watershed year.

President Richard Nixon took office with the country still shellshocked by the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and Robert Kennedy the years before. The country was riven by division with dissention growing over the Vietnam War. And while that summer brought us Woodstock and the moon landing, a feel-good respite from growing woes, that would soon give way to Altamont and the shootings of students at Kent State and Jackson State universities in 1970.

It was a watershed year for the LGBT community too, with gay icon Judy Garland’s death and the transformative Stonewall Riots occurring with in the same week in June. It was also a key year in the environmental movement when the Cuyahoga River had its most famous fire (the same day Garland died) which spurred a spate of federal environmental action.

That year is the one the Cleveland History Center has chosen to focus on for its annual themed benefit party, Somewhere in Time. Events and fashions from that year will be front and center on display, with food, drinks and music representing 1969 as well (Don’t take the brown acid!) Partygoers are, of course, invited to deck themselves in whatever they think represents that era, if they choose.

Tickets are $50-$150, and all money raised benefits educational and public programs at the Cleveland History Center.
