The 1988 John Waters film Hairspray has become a cult classic, with its appealingly offbeat story of teenagers on a local bandstand-style TV show in the early 60s. Its central character is Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who becomes the star of the show and confronts and faces down attempts to shame and control her and her friends — even championing racial integration. The show spawned a musical of the same name, which debuted on Broadway in 2002.
Akron’s upstart theater ensemble the Millennial Theatre Project tackles the show, presenting it at Akron Civic Theatre for five performances in an intimate cabaret setting. Tickets are $20.
