Jazz Guitarist Charlie Ballantine & His Quartet Interpret the Music of Bob Dylan at the BOP STOP

Wed 1/23 @ 7PM

Last year, Indianapolis-based jazz guitarist/composer/educator Charlie Ballantine released Life Is Brief: The Music of Bob Dylan. On it, the musician, who has a background in folk, jazz and blues, tackles what would seem to be a not-terribly-fertile field for jazz interpretation; Dylan was known for his radical approach to lyric writing, often over bare-bones and monotonous tunes.

Yet Ballantine and his fellow musicians find a wealthy of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic possibility on the mostly instrumental tracks, which include versions of “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” “Masters of War,” “Shelter from the Storm” and “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.”

Ballantine will bring this music to the BOP STOP, joined by saxophonist Amanda Gardier (who also played on the album), bassist Quinn Sternberg and drummer Chris Parker. Tickets are $15.
