Oberlin-based sculptor/installation artist Johnny Coleman, an associate professor of art and African-American studies at Oberlin College, began his residency at SPACES Gallery in Ohio City in early December, when he began work on his immersive installation titled Crossing The Water: Requiem For Lee Howard Dobbins.
It’s a reflection on the spirit of a former slave child, who was travelling with his family to escape to Canada. He became ill in Oberlin, where he was left behind with a local family, died and was buried by neighbors who raised money for his burial and headstone.
“This project is a meditation on an imagined place in which he might have been free,” says the artist statement.
Coleman will share more thoughts about his work and discuss the intersection of art and spirituality at a roundtable with M. Carmen Lane, artist & director of ATNSC: Center for Healing & Creative Leadership and artist Kole Robison Brooks.
It’s free and open to the public.
