Pianist Terry Boyarsky Demonstrates Classical/Ethnic Folk Connection @ Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Art

Sat 12/8 @ 8PM

Cleveland-based Russian balalaika player Oleg Kruglyakov was scheduled to perform as part of the “Around the World” music series hosted by Kent’s Standing Rock Cultural Arts.

However, they tell us that he “has been unavoidably detained in Siberia,” which hopefully isn’t as sinister as it sounds. Luckily, Kruglyakov performs as half of the Russian duo with pianist/ethnomusicologist Terry Boyarsky, and she was available to step in for him. (He’ll be rescheduled for next season).

She’ll perform a program called “Classical Expressions of the Folk Tradition,” in which she’ll share some of the many pieces by classical composers based on ethnic music from countries such as Russia, Armenia, Rumania and Afghanistan. It will include pieces by Bach and Bartok as well as Komitas, called “the father of Armenian classical music” and Armenian-Greek mystic G. I. Gurdjieff.

Music starts at 8, but prior to the concert, there’ll be a meet-the-artist reception with food and drinks, including such Eastern European specialities as borscht, blini and kvass. It’s a $10 suggested donation (or pay what you can) and the food is included!
