Video Artist Brian Bress Talks About His Exhibit at the Akron Art Museum

Thu 11/29 @ 6:30PM

Brian Bress’ video art exhibit, Pictures Become You, which opened at the Akron Art Museum in October, features cartoonish, puppet-like characters with stylized movements that morph and do strange things in slow, deliberate movements in repeating loops and don’t acknowledge or interact with viewers. The exhibit features single screen videos, two diptych videos and one triptych video, along with the costume and props that Bress designed and wore in the videos.

“His figures convey a sense of absurdity and self-consciousness that makes them extremely appealing and mesmerizing to watch,” says Akron Art Museum chief curator Ellen Rudolph. “That inaccessibility combined with the characters’ appeal creates a tension about who they are and what they are trying to tell us.”

Now hear Bress himself explain what he’s about when he comes to the Akron Art Museum for an artist talk where he’ll shed some light on how he creates his characters, builds his costumes and puts it all together in his films. The talk is free and open to all. Pictures Become You will be on view through April 14, 2019.
