Guitarist Glenn Schwartz Celebrated in Memorial at the Beachland Ballroom

Sun 11/25 @1-4PM

Guitarist Glenn Schwartz was a local treasure to many in the Cleveland music scene and an enigma (or even an annoyance) to many others. His story has been oft-told: how he formed the James Gang before leaving his slot to Joe Walsh and heading for the west coast to co-found Pacific Gas & Electric which had a big hit with “Are You Ready?” in 1970; how he had some sort of breakdown involving his conversion to Christianity; how he returned to Cleveland to join the Reverend Larry Hill’s Geneva-based cult and play with his All Saved Freak Band before falling off the radar for a while and resurfacing living in his van in the North Collinwood neighborhood.

When the 78-year-old Schwartz passed away on November 2 at the age of 78, he had been playing out around town again since the 1990s in the Schwartz Brothers Band with his bass-playing brother Gene, playing blues and preaching between tunes at Hoopples in the Flats and the Beachland. The Beachland Ballroom will host a tribute to Glenn. It’s free and open to all.
