Canadian violinist James Ehnes is, at 42, still on the ascendant end of his career, although he already has more than three dozen recordings and a Grammy (for Best Instrumental Soloist) to his credit.

He and his longtime accompanist, pianist Andrew Armstrong, are planning to celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday (2020, so be prepared for a LOT of Beethoven that year) by performing his 10 violin sonatas in concerts around the world.

Meanwhile, get a advance taste when they perform Beethoven’s Sonata NO. 2 in D major at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel for a concert at which he’ll play Oberlin’s Stradivarius instrument (he also regularly plays his own). The program there also includes Johannes Brahms’ Sonatensatz, John Corigliano’s Sonata for Violin and Piano and Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata No. 2.

In the press release for the concert, Ehnes says, “Sometimes I like to put together programs that are thematic, or at least show what I consider to be important interrelationships. But sometimes — often — I feel like recitals are a great opportunity to present the audience with a ‘musical buffet,’ presenting great examples of the tremendous variety of music written for the violin and piano. This program Andy and I will play in Oberlin is one of the latter: a program that we hope showcases the great variety of masterpieces written for our instrumental combination.”

Tickets are $35.
