Classical Revolution Cleveland Performs All Over the Neighborhood as Gordon Square’s “Musician-in-Residence”

Sun 10/14 @ 1PM

In the last nine years, Classical Revolution Cleveland, founded by violinist Ariel Clayton Karas, has become part of the Gordon Square community with its monthly events at the Happy Dog. Now the ensemble has been named the first “musician-in-residence” in the Gordon Square Arts District.

“When applications opened in late summer for a Musician-in-Residence in the Gordon Square Arts District, I knew I needed to focus the application on the work I do with Classical Revolution Cleveland,” says Karas. “At first I thought, “they aren’t going to want MORE of what we do — we are already here so much!” But I went for it anyway, and CRC colleagues and I cooked up some pretty neat ideas for programming we ended up including in our application.”

The stipend accompanying the designation has given the ensemble the ability to try some new things, so they’ll be popping up around the neighborhood from now through the end of the year. Their debut performance was a “Soundscape” in the W. 65th Street tunnel September 30, which they described as “an immersive performance with listeners and passersby experiencing the combination of free-form improvisation of a string quintet and the unique acoustical properties of a pedestrian tunnel.”

Look for them Sun 10/14 in the Near West Theatre Café area, where they’ll be doing a family concert, introducing string, woodwind and percussion instruments to younger children, with sing-along, instrument demos and a chance to meet the musicians. They’ve got a full schedule of events coming up at the Gordon Square Arts Space, 78th Street Studios, the HP gas station at Lorain & West 73rd, and pop-up performances at spaces to be named. Follow them on Facebook to learn where they will be!
