Burning River Baroque Ensemble Looks at “Destructive Desires” in Three Concerts

Fri 10/19 @ 7:30PM

Sat 10/20 @ 7:30PM

Sun 10/21 @ 2PM

Cleveland’s little two-woman Burning River Baroque ensemble — co-directors Malina Rauschenfels (cello, soprano) and Paula Maust (harpsichord) — uses 17th and 18th century music to tell stories about eternal passions. They compare the themes in their program “Destructive Desires” to the issues behind the #MeToo movement — consent and the misuse of power.

“We intend to demonstrate various forms of power imbalance and lack of consent in stories old enough to be in our collective unconscious,” says Maust. That includes stories from the Bible and Greek mythology which they weave in with the musical selections.

They’ll perform a house concert in Cleveland Heights Friday night. Go to rsvp@burning-river-baroque.org to make a reservation. On Saturday they’ll perform at St. Alban Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, and on Sunday they’ll do a benefit for the YWCA of Great Cleveland at Lakewood Congregational Church.

Admission is a suggested $20 donation.
