FRONT Artist Nicholas Buffon Comes to the Akron Art Museum to Discuss his Work There

Thu 9/20 @ 6:30PM

New York-based artist Nicholas Buffon is one of the national/international artists invited to produce work for the first FRONT International Triennial, running through Sun 9/29 at various Northeast Ohio venues.

Buffon’s pieces, on view as part of a group show at the Akron Art Museum, include 17 detailed color drawings of significant landmarks in LGBTQ history into which he often inserts himself (along with two scuptures). While many of his locations (such as Stonewall Inn) are in New York, like many FRONT artists he also produced work specifically created for the event with local references. So his exhibit also includes such locations as Akron’s iconic Innerbelt Nite Club.

“I’ve been thinking of subtle ways to portray resistance in this fractious political moment,” says Buffon. “How I see it, strength and resilience are where community exists. So I’ve started painting slices of my community, starting with gay bars closest to me, both historic and contemporary.”

He’ll be coming to the Akron Art Museum to talk about his work and take part in a dialogue with representatives from the local businesses and organizations he drew. It’s free and open to all.
